Nathula Pass, Sikkim

Food to eat in North Eastern India

North East India's numerous tribes and cultures are guaranteed to spoil you with unique and mouth-watering cuisine. The majority of their foods and drinks are made using basic ingredients such as Bamboo Shoots, BhutJolokia, and local greens. The meals or food are made with mustard oil to enhance the flavour and make them more unusual.

We've gathered a few distinct cuisines, dinners, and foods from North East India that travellers should try when travelling across the region.


The Jaintia tribe of Meghalaya dwells on the Jaintia Hills. Their dinner consisted of Jadoh (a type of pork biryani) prepared with rice, onion, garlic, turmeric, and ginger.

This variation is known as Jadoh snam because raw pork blood is mixed into the rice and cooked in swine oil.

Ja Mardoh (heartleaf) with soft tomatoes, crisp onions, and a pinch of salt. The flavour is fresh and fishy, and the heart-leaf steam adds texture to the salad.

Mint (pudina) leaves are used to make a vibrant green chutney. Dosyear is pepper chicken; it is spicy and a good dish to eat if you have a cold. Dohkhlieh is a salad of cooked pork and onions. The pork is boiled and sliced into small pieces, and pork fat helps combine the meat and onions.


A cup of hot Phalap (smoked tea) is all you need on a cold December morning. This tea is created from fragile tea leaves that have been roasted and placed inside bamboo. To complete the smoking process, the bamboo is hung over wood-fired cooking stoves. It is safe to ingest when the smoke has dried.

Smoked sun-dried fish

Sun-dried smoked fish for fish preparation using colocasia leaves. The leaves offer several health advantages and are cooked in a variety of ways across India. Sun drying and fermenting processes are popular in northeast India. Food is cooked over firewood for a smoky flavour, but not for an extended period to keep its original flavour. Spices are used in moderation.

Mishing Thali

The healthy Mishing Thali includes grilled pork on a stick, Olum Owin, and rice-powdered chicken. Namshing, dried river fish fried with colocasia leaf and some cold, goes well with it. Aeg Adin is pork fried with mustard green. This pork combo has long been a local favourite. Then there's a vegetarian version of black lentils with rice powder. Healthy and crispy shredded carrot, cabbage, and chilli chutney. Purang is sticky rice wrapped in a leaf.

Naga Sema Thali

Delicious Naga Sema thali, brings a kick to the mouth with red axone chutney which is made by adding some salt, roasted tomatoes, green chillies, fermented soybean, and ginger and mashing it all together. Galho is a porridge prepared with rice and either veggies or meat. This one has anishi and namoi pat (herb) (colocasia root). This has a dull flavour but is highly healthful. Salad greens are composed of Asian pennywort and tomatoes. It adds crispness and freshness to the dish. Rice with Naga-style fish curry. The axone in the tomato curry gives the meal colour and flavour. Thevo Chu is pork that has been cooked with bastenga (bamboo stalk), chilli, ginger, and garlic.

Tiwa Karbi Tribe Thali

Wahoo Saker, which is pork meat cooked with black lentils, is part of the Tiwa Karbi Tribe Thali. The yellow fish curry with rice powder and turmeric is known as Jumbang Saker. Thakum Saker is a green dish consisting of colocasia leaves and dried fish. Laflang is dried fish wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over an open fire with ginger, garlic, chilli, and handmade sodium bicarbonate (khar). Tumrelai waftuka is fried pork intestine with fig leaves. The dinner is accompanied by paramai, which is rice cooked in a bottle gourd shell.
